Timber Products Inspection (TP) offers a state-of-the-art laboratory dedicated to the analysis of biomass (woody or agriculturally derived materials) and pyrogenic biocarbon (e.g. biochar, biocarbon, biocoal, etc.).
Biomass may be tested in the raw form (e.g. residues, chips, etc.) or as engineered products (e.g. pellets, briquettes, bales, etc.). Testing is often to verify compliance with a customer specification or as part of a product certification. Common test parameters include proximate/ultimate analysis, gross or net calorific values, physical properties, metals, halogens, ash fusibility, etc.
Pyrogenic biocarbon samples are tested for a variety of purposes. It may be intended for coal replacement in energy production (biocoal), to replace coal as a reductant in steel manufacturing or other heavy industry (biocarbon) or used for environmental benefit and carbon sequestration (biochar). Regardless of the intended use TP’s biomass lab provides testing for common properties of interest (e.g. moisture, ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon, total carbon, organic/inorganic carbon, H:Corg molar ration, etc.).
TP’s biomass lab is ISO 17025 accredited, which provides assurance of reliable results. TP offers standard turnaround times of 7 – 10 business days with RUSH options to keep your project moving forward at the desired pace.

Pellet Fuels Institute Densified Fuel Standards Program
TP provides ENplus Auditing and Consulting through Biomass Energy Lab (BEL). BEL was formed as a joint venture between Timber Products Inspection and Control Union USA to establish a United States based solid biofuels testing lab to meet the needs of the wood pellet export market.
